USA and Iran have reached an agreement
The USA and Iran have reached an initial agreement that will lead to an end to the war – but many issues remain to be resolved.
An agreement will be signed on Friday, according to Donald Trump. Then, it is reported that maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz can continue as it did before the war.
Late on Sunday, Swedish time, the news came that the USA and Iran have reached an agreement in the war.
– A permanent and immediate end to the war has been declared on all fronts, including Lebanon, says Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi in a television statement.
The agreement is said to be in practice about a 60-day ceasefire. While it lasts, the countries will continue negotiations on issues where they do not yet agree – such as Iran's nuclear energy.
Representatives from the US and Iran are said to be signing a document in Switzerland on Friday. The Strait of Hormuz will then also be reopened, US President Donald Trump has said. The strait in the Persian Gulf is a bottleneck where Iran, as a counter-movement in the war, has stopped a large part of the world's oil traffic.
Iran: The US has been defeated
US President Donald Trump says the strait can only be opened in a few days as there are mines that need to be cleared in the shipping lanes.
The agreement also covers Israel's warfare in Lebanon, where the country says it is attacking the Iranian-allied Shiite militia Hezbollah. In previous agreements between the US and Iran, it has been shown that they have not agreed on whether Lebanon is included, while Israel has escalated a ground invasion there.
Despite the announcement of an agreement, the tone between Iran and the US is high. From the Iranian side, it is said that the US and Israel have been "humiliated" in the war and that Iran has achieved "great victories".
Attacks may resume
Donald Trump is threatening to resume US attacks on Iran if the parties fail to reach an agreement on Iran's nuclear program, The New York Times reports. In an interview with the newspaper, the president is asked in more detail about how much Iran will be allowed to enrich uranium - and how it will differ from the scrapped nuclear energy agreement from 2015.
- They will only be allowed to enrich for non-military purposes. Forever, Trump replies.
Iran's Foreign Ministry stated during the night of Monday that the country expects to begin follow-up negotiations soon to reach a "final agreement".
The past 24 hours have been marked by a variety of different reports. The agreement also looked to be running out of steam when Israel attacked the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital Beirut early Sunday, which prompted Iran to protest.
FACTS
Background: The agreement between the US and Iran
Much is unclear about the declaration of intent that the US and Iran have agreed to end the Iran war. This is known at this time:
Negotiations on Iran's nuclear program for 60 days: When the US and Israel attacked Iran, the justification was that the country was close to acquiring nuclear weapons. How to prevent this - how underground facilities and highly enriched uranium can be destroyed - will be addressed in technical talks during the period, according to the White House.
Strait of Hormuz opens: The shipping route between Iran and Oman, which is so important for international oil trade, will open to traffic when the agreement is signed on Friday. According to President Donald Trump, traffic will be "free of charge" and the US blockade will be lifted. However, Iran wants to be able to charge a fee for passing ships, according to the AP.
Lift sanctions: International sanctions against Iran will be lifted and certain frozen assets will become available. It is unclear which sanctions apply.
Peace in Lebanon: The deal also includes a halt to fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Shiite militia Hezbollah in Lebanon. However, it is unclear how Israel will respond to this.
