Bolsonaro's son gets prison

Brazil's Supreme Court on Tuesday sentenced Eduardo Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, to over four years in prison for urging the United States to impose sanctions on Brazil.

The calls were made, according to the ruling, in connection with the trial of his father, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison for trying to stage a coup after his election loss in 2022.

Bolsonaro the younger lives in the United States and was sentenced in his absence. In addition to the prison sentence, he is also barred from holding public office in Brazil for eight years after serving his sentence.

“There is only one real purpose to this pointless trial: to remove my name from the election,” Bolsonaro, who planned to run as a substitute in the Senate elections in October, claimed in a statement after the verdict.
