Zelensky and Trump meet during the G7 summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in place and the Iran deal is "done", according to US President Donald Trump.
The leaders at the G7 summit in France are thus focusing on the Ukraine war.
- Russia should make a deal with Ukraine, says Trump on site in Evian-les-Bains.
He also confirms that he has a meeting with Zelensky scheduled for later on Tuesday.
The
Ukrainian president was welcomed in the morning by the host country's
President Emmanuel Macron, before a discussion about Russia's offensive
war began.
A central player in the context is Donald Trump, who
spoke on the phone with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir
Putin on Sunday. Trump has been focused on the Iran war in recent weeks,
but late on Monday he signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran
that is intended to lead to a lasting peace agreement.
“Now that this (Iran) is over, we will focus on that (Ukraine),” he said at the G7 meeting.
Trump’s
mediation efforts have previously been criticized for being too
accommodating to the aggressor Russia. European leaders on site are
expected to emphasize the importance of Moscow making concessions in a
future peace settlement.
The informal G7 (Group of Seven)
consists of seven of the world’s leading industrialized countries that
are also considered democracies: France, Italy, Japan, Canada, the
United Kingdom, Germany and the United States. Until 2014, Russia was
also part of the group, which was then called the G8.
