Switzerland votes down proposal for population cap

The Swiss vote no to the proposal for a population cap of 10 million inhabitants. This is clear after today's referendum, reports Politico.

- Swiss voters have sent a strong signal of reliability, openness and continued reciprocity, says David McAllister, chairman of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, to the site.

55 percent voted against the proposal and 45 percent in favor. Voter turnout was 58 percent, according to Swissinfo.

The proposal came from the right-wing populist Swiss People's Party (SVP), which accuses immigrants of being behind several of the country's problems. Other government parties and business organizations have warned of labor shortages and a worsening relationship with the EU.

"Lebanon is our soul and violations of the Islamic Republic's red lines will not be tolerated," said the council's secretary Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr according to Iran International.

Twelve skydivers killed in plane crash in the US
