Political scientist: Breakthrough – but pitfalls abound
The peace agreement between the US and Iran is a diplomatic breakthrough, and a way for both sides to proclaim themselves victors. Anders Persson, associate professor of political science at Linnaeus University, tells TT.
But he sees several pitfalls on the way forward. He wonders, among other things, whether the agreement means lasting peace or whether it is a pause in the fighting. He also points out that the issue of Iran's nuclear technology is being postponed and that it is unclear whether the agreement means Israel withdrawing from Lebanon.
- Israel has said it does not want it, and then you encounter patrols there already, says Persson.
Rouzbeh Parsi, an Iran expert and adjunct lecturer at Lund University, tells Ekot that many are now breathing a sigh of relief. However, he believes that the relationship between the US and Israel will not continue to be the same as before.
The news of the agreement came on Sunday. It means, among other things, that the fighting, including in Lebanon, will end and that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened.
Source: US allows Iran to charge fees in the Strait of Hormuz
The US has agreed that Iran will be allowed to charge fees for shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This is reported by the Iranian state news agency Fars, AFP reports.
According to a source, Tehran has managed to add a clause on fees for shipping services to the framework agreement with the US shortly before it was made public.
“The use of the term ‘shipping services’ means that the US has accepted that fees will be paid to Iran,” Fars writes according to AFP.
