37 years in prison for activists in Myanmar

Nine activists have been sentenced to prison for protesting against the elections in Myanmar last December, an activist group announced on Wednesday.

Eight of the activists have been sentenced to 37 years in prison and one to 27 years in prison. They gathered in a protest in central Mandalay to, among other things, urge people to abolish the conscription law and boycott the elections, which were also condemned internationally.

The ruling military junta has not commented publicly on the sentences.

Around 32,000 people have been arrested since the military coup in 2021 and more than 14,000 have been imprisoned, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners group.
