Fires are raging on several Greek islands. Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate on Crete, according to local authorities.

– We evacuated about 8,000 people, says Maria Lioni, deputy governor of Rethymnon, to the state television channel ERT.

The wildfire that started on Wednesday afternoon is still out of control, ERT reports. Over 200 firefighters are involved in the extinguishing work but aircraft cannot be deployed due to the strong winds.

Three firefighters have died while fighting a blaze in Greece, two died when their car was engulfed in flames in Rethymnon on Crete, and one firefighter died on the Peloponnese peninsula.

Stable situation in Gironde

In southwestern France, where the monster fire in Gironde is now in its seventh day, the night has been calm, local authorities report.

“The night has been calm. This morning the fire is stable,” writes the prefect of Gironde on X.

The weather is also expected to become more favorable during the day with slightly lower temperatures and showers in the region.

On Wednesday, a new fire broke out in Provence in southern France, not far from the forest fire already raging in the region. More than 600 people have been forced to evacuate and 250 firefighters, supported by firefighting aircraft, are struggling to extinguish the fire.

New evacuations in Spain

A dozen or so fires are raging in several parts of the country in Spain, according to RTVE. While the major fires around Madrid and Ávila have stabilized and most people have been allowed to return home, fires in northwestern Spain have prompted authorities to issue new evacuation orders.

In Castellón, Valencia on Spain's east coast, the wildfire that has forced 10,000 people to evacuate continues to spread, Rtve reported.
