Kenya investigates mysterious elephant deaths
Kenyan wildlife officials have launched an investigation after 15 elephants were found dead in the space of a month.
The elephants died between June 24 and July 24 of this year for reasons that are still unclear in Amboseli National Park, Kimana Reserve and the Kuku Ranch area, according to the Kenyan wildlife service.
Ten of the elephants showed signs of partial paralysis a few days before they died. The others had already decomposed or had been eaten before they were found, making it difficult to determine the cause of death.
Preliminary tests have revealed a potentially toxic substance in several of the affected elephants.
Amboseli National Park, next to the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, is a famous tourist destination with elephant herds and savannah landscapes.
