Spaniards return – fires continue
In Spain, people are starting to return home while firefighters are trying to get the fires under control.
Late Tuesday evening, the evacuation order was lifted for several municipalities around the major fires in Madrid and Ávila.
"24,000 evacuated people have been able to return home, and another 20,000 will not have to isolate themselves in the Madrid region," the authorities in Madrid wrote on X.
Strong winds and a new heat wave have made extinguishing work more difficult, but according to the fire department in Madrid, the fires around the capital have been stable during the night.
The night has also been stable in Gironde in southwestern France, the local authorities announced.
“The night was calm, the fire is still stabilized this morning,” the prefect of Gironde writes on X.
According to a firefighter spoken to by BFMTV, the day will be spent reinforcing firefighting lines as the wind is expected to change.
