A controversial cooperation in nuclear energy issues between the US and Saudi Arabia was finalized on Wednesday evening.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and his Saudi counterpart Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman have signed the cooperation agreement, according to the US Department of Energy.

Wright claims in a written statement that the agreement complies with the rules regarding nuclear energy safety and non-proliferation agreements.

The US also states that the agreement involves cooperation in nuclear energy issues for "coming decades" and that the agreement concerns "many billions of dollars".

The agreement will now be sent to the US Congress for review, according to the statement.

Concerns about the cooperation include possible possibilities for Saudi Arabia to manufacture nuclear weapons in the future.
