Sources: Trump considering military intervention in Mali

The Trump administration is considering a military intervention in Mali, targeting the al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM. This is reported by sources for the Washington Post.

If so, it would be the eighth country where Trump has ordered military intervention during his second term.

Mali and several other West African countries have in recent years distanced themselves from the West and turned to Russia for help. Mali has, among other things, tried to combat JNIM with Russian mercenaries, including the Wagner Group.

“We hope that other African nations take note of Russia’s terrible performance in combating terrorism,” says a source within the Trump administration.

Sources: Saudi Arabia and US Agree on Nuclear Energy Deal

The US and Saudi Arabia have reached an agreement that could allow Saudi Arabia to enrich its own uranium for nuclear reactors, sources told US media.

The agreement will last for the next 30 years, according to WSJ sources.

Such an agreement would likely be supported by many Republicans, writes NYT. But criticism is likely to come from members of both parties, as well as from Israel.

The Trump administration plans to announce and sign the agreement on Wednesday, according to the sources.

Since the United States took control of Venezuela’s oil exports, it has collected $13 billion, around SEK 125 billion, in revenue. But where the oil money went is largely unclear. This is according to the Financial Times.

In April, the United States stated that Venezuela received around $3 billion from oil exports, but the country’s government has so far only reported a single transfer of $300 million.

At the same time, Donald Trump has given conflicting statements. He has said that the US “makes a lot of money” from Venezuelan oil, while a presidential order describes the US as the manager of the money.

Both Republicans and Democrats in Congress are now demanding answers about how the oil revenues are being used, writes the Financial Times.

Germany approves Franco-Russian nuclear project

German authorities have given the green light to a controversial Franco-Russian nuclear project.

The project is a collaboration between a subsidiary of French company Framatome and Russian state nuclear company Rosatom. The project involves producing fuel rods for use in Russian-designed nuclear reactors.

The project will be based at Framatome’s facility in the German state of Lower Saxony.

Rosatom has been exempted from EU sanctions imposed on Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Critics say the decision is dangerous from a security perspective. Germany is Ukraine’s largest supporter of the country’s defense against Russia and has been on high alert for espionage and sabotage by Moscow.
