No decision on new sanctions against Russia
EU ambassadors could not agree on a new sanctions package against Russia on Wednesday.
The disagreement concerns, among other things, the issue of a ban on the purchase, import or transport of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). Greece questions formulations that would hit the country's shipping industry hard.
To avoid the price ceiling on Russian oil being raised from 44 US dollars per barrel to 58 dollars, an agreement is required by Thursday at the latest. Raising the price ceiling would be economically beneficial for Russia.
Last week, negotiations on the sanctions package, which is the 21st from the EU, failed. The negotiations were then postponed.
Late on Wednesday, the EU announced that the meeting would continue on Thursday morning. Sanctions must be approved by all 27 member states.
