Germany to buy Tomahawks from US
The US has given the green light for Germany to buy Tomahawk missiles, Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced.
The agreement to buy the long-range missiles was reached during the NATO summit in Turkey. It will “close an important strategic gap in our defenses,” according to Merz.
“At the same time, we will work on developing our own European systems and stationing them in Europe,” he said.
No word was given on when the missiles would be delivered. They are intended to be launched from submarines and warships and have a range of 1,600 kilometers.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized that the US has key capabilities that Europe cannot do without.
The announcement follows months of uncertainty about whether Germany would receive the American missiles, especially since Merz and US President Trump disagreed about the war in Iran.
