Former president sentenced to prison – again
Former president Yoon Suk-Yeol will receive an additional seven years in prison for trying to impose martial law in 2024. This is what the Supreme Court of South Korea has ruled.
The sentence now determined concerns, among other things, forged signatures and that Yoon used bodyguards to try to prevent his own arrest afterwards.
The former head of state is already locked up, after being sentenced to life imprisonment for rebellion.
It was a very dramatic 24 hours in South Korea in December 2024, when Yoon tried to strengthen his grip on power by declaring martial law. However, Parliament managed to come together to vote down the measure after just six hours.
