Devastating floods in southern China's Guangxi region continue to claim lives. The confirmed death toll has risen to 39 and nine people are still missing, state media reported.

The torrential rain and flooding has hit southern and central China hard this week. 26 people were killed when a dam burst at the Liulan reservoir, and seven people are missing, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.

"We never received any warning. If we had, the losses would have been much less," said a man surnamed Huang.

In Gantang, people pile furniture and personal belongings in piles on the streets, while residents clean their houses after the muddy water.

600 residents of Dutian village, located near the reservoir and directly affected when the water rose, have found shelter but are cut off from the outside world.
