US to punish countries that buy Russian energy

Four senators, two Republicans and two Democrats, have agreed with Donald Trump on new legislation to punish countries that buy Russian oil and gas. They state this according to AFP.

In a joint statement, the senators write that the legislation will be in place "very soon", and that countries that feed the Russian war machine "must pay a high price".

The law gives Trump the opportunity to impose sanctions and tariffs against Russia's trading partners. China and India are two of the largest buyers of Russian energy, but no details are given about which countries may be subject to the punitive measures.

Zelensky: China speaks out against Russia's nuclear threat for the first time

China has for the first time strongly condemned Russian threats to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, says Volodymyr Zelenskyj according to Kyiv Post.

The Ukrainian president says that several European leaders have spoken with Chinese representatives recently, and that China has unequivocally spoken out against the Russian threats.

– It seems to me that this is the first time Beijing has responded so clearly and forcefully, says Zelenskyj.

Recently, several prominent Russians have raised the issue of nuclear escalation, including former president and Security Council vice-chairman Dmitry Medvedev, one of the most hawkish politicians in Russia.
