Death toll nears 500 after Himalayan disaster

The death toll from the landslide disaster in Nepal and Tibet has increased by 80 since Thursday and a total of 469 people have now died. This is stated by local authorities according to several media outlets.

More than 1,400 people are still missing and the death toll is expected to rise further. Rescue work is being hampered by the fact that several bridges and around 40 kilometers of the road network have been destroyed in the area.

The region is part of the Himalayan mountain range and the area is popular with both mountaineers and pilgrims. Among those missing are several hundred foreign tourists.

Dam has burst in Tibet: “Water level is rising”

A dam in Tibet has burst after the serious landslide disaster earlier this week, a senior official told Reuters.

“We can see that the water level in the river is rising,” he says, adding that it is still unclear how high the level is.

Earlier on Friday, rescue work on the Tibetan side was paused due to concerns about the dam. Nepal's army is also suspending rescue work for at least an hour and a half.
