New study: El Niño is strengthened by climate change
The weather phenomenon El Niño is growing stronger due to climate change, according to a new study.
El Niño events are about 36 percent stronger than they were before industrialization. And that development has accelerated over the past four decades.
This is according to the new study, which was published on Thursday in the scientific journal Science.
The research results come at the same time as this year's El Niño in the coming months is predicted to be the strongest ever measured.
El Niño, which occurs on average every two to seven years, warms the surface waters in the eastern parts of the Pacific Ocean. This means more extreme weather events, often with droughts in some parts of the world and floods in other places.
