Two from Sweden missing after natural disaster
A Swedish citizen and a foreigner living in Sweden are among the more than a thousand people missing after the dramatic mudslide in the Himalayas, the Swedish Foreign Ministry says.
"The Foreign Ministry is aware that a Swedish citizen in his 40s, resident in Svealand, and a foreign citizen in his 30s, resident in Götaland, have been reported missing in connection with the landslide in the border area between Nepal and Tibet," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs writes.
The information that a Swedish citizen is missing first came from Nepal's tourism authority.
Entire villages were swept away when the water rose rapidly in rivers in the border area between Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday. The flood, believed to have been caused by a glacier collapse, swept away soil and debris, burying entire residential areas, infrastructure and markets.
The day after the disaster, more than 270 deaths have been confirmed in Nepal alone. Around 1,300 people, including hundreds of tourists, are missing in Nepal and China
People from over 30 countries are among the missing, according to information from the Nepal Tourism Authority. The vast majority of foreigners, over 170 people, are Indians. 65 are missing from the United States and 53 from Ukraine. A Swedish citizen is also on the list.
Given that search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, the information should be described as preliminary.
