New details about Hungarian Gripen crash
A fault on the instrument panel may have been behind the accident with a Gripen plane in Hungary.
It was on Monday that a Hungarian Gripen C plane crashed during an exercise. According to Corren, who refers to Hungarian media, it was a technical fault on the plane that was behind the crash – the plane's screens started showing error messages and then suddenly went out.
The exact cause of the incident is not believed to be clear for several weeks, Hungarian media write. The manufacturer Saab has stated that it is assisting the investigation.
The pilot, a 51-year-old man described as very experienced, initially appeared to have managed to land but the plane skidded off the runway and he was forced to eject. He is now being treated for serious spinal cord injuries.
The Hungarian Defence Forces have decided to halt all training flights with the Gripen until the investigation is complete.
