New poll: Iceland may vote no to EU talks

A day before Iceland's referendum on EU negotiations, a new Gallup poll shows a narrow advantage for the no side: 51.6 percent to 48.4 percent.

The change is particularly visible among young people: in June, over 60 percent of 18-29-year-olds wanted to resume EU talks, now just as many are against.

Halldór Benjamín Thorbergsson, leader of the no movement Áfram Iceland, says that the poll confirms the impression he already had.

"I feel like we have a tailwind now," he tells NTB.

Saturday's vote is not about membership, but about whether Iceland should start negotiating with the EU again. A yes vote leads to new negotiations and later a new vote on membership itself. A no vote puts the EU issue aside, but Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrín Gunnarsdóttir says she still believes in a yes vote, according to NTB.

The economy has been important in the debate, especially fishing. The question of Iceland's sovereignty also plays a major role.

The referendum was planned for 2027, but was brought forward when the security situation changed due to Trump's threats against Greenland, the war in Ukraine and unrest in the Arctic.

Two expert groups have each been unable to conclude in their reports that the spiral scandal in Greenland can be classified as genocide, writes TT.

One concluded that it was not genocide, and the other that it possibly was.

- So we cannot say on behalf of the government whether genocide occurred or not, says Mariane Paviasen Jensen, Greenland's Minister for Children, Youth, Justice and Equality.

From the 1960s, thousands of Inuit women in Greenland had IUDs inserted by the Danish state, often without their consent or knowledge, to reduce their birth rate. According to several Greenlandic politicians, this should be seen as genocide.

Zelensky: Will fire 1,000 drones against Russia per day

Ukraine will fire 1,000 long-range drones per day against Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, according to Reuters.

Currently, around 300 Ukrainian drones are fired per day against Russia.

– There needs to be more. There is a concrete goal and we will complete this task, says Zelensky.
