Frederiksen travels to New York to sign agreement

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen are traveling to New York on Sunday in connection with the new Greenland agreement, Danish TV2 reports. The plan is for the agreement to be signed by the USA, Denmark, and Greenland at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

Frederiksen tells the news channel that she understands there is great curiosity regarding the agreement's content but that she cannot go into any details before everything is finalized.

Both Danish and Greenlandic leaders have repeatedly assured their citizens that the agreement respects Greenland's right to self-determination and Denmark's sovereignty.

Denmark and the USA are expected to sign the security agreement concerning Greenland when Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen meets US President Donald Trump in New York this week, AFP reports.

Exactly what the agreement contains is unclear, but it respects Denmark's "red lines" regarding Greenland, says Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen prior to his departure for New York.

"A long period of uncertainty will hopefully be replaced by a binding agreement that strengthens security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic," he says.
