Mont Blanc grows – two meters taller than in 2023
Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, is nearly two meters taller now than it was at the time of the last measurement in 2023, surveyors reported on Wednesday.
The mountain now measures 4,807.47 meters, and according to Jean des Garets, chief field surveyor for the Haute-Savoie region, the summit is “constantly changing.”
“Each individual measurement is not significant in itself, but it provides data that will be analyzed over time,” he says.
Since 2001, researchers have measured the height of the mountain peak every two to three years to try to understand how climate change is affecting the Alps.
The mountain peak itself stands at approximately 4,792 meters above sea level, but the covering of ice and snow varies from year to year, causing the mountain’s total height to fluctuate.
