Four people have been killed in a shooting at a school in Oregon.

Police arrived on the scene three minutes after the initial alert.

By then, the 16-year-old shooter was already dead—shot by a passerby.

Three children—aged 5, 8, and 11—were killed during a shooting in the middle of the school day at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.

A teacher was also killed during the mass shooting.

A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher are being treated in the hospital for serious injuries.

16-year-old killer

A 16-year-old local resident is suspected of carrying out the attack on the elementary school.

This was stated by Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz during an emotional press conference held overnight.

Police spokesperson Sheila Miller stated that the first alert from the school was received at 12:59 PM local time.

At that stage, reports indicated that "an unknown male" had fired shots into a car on the school grounds.

One minute later, police received several additional alerts stating that the individual had entered the school and begun shooting.

Pursued the shooter

Three minutes after the initial alert, at 1:02 PM, the first police patrols arrived on the scene.

Immediately upon their arrival at the school, police were informed that the shooter had been shot and killed inside the building. “We have confirmed that he is dead. However, it remains unclear who shot him,” said Sheila Miller at a press briefing shortly after the shooting.

Later that night, police announced that the shooter was neutralized by a member of the public who saw him enter the school with a weapon.

This individual followed the 16-year-old shooter into the building and shot him dead.

During the night, police declined to say whether the 16-year-old was a former student at the school.

At the press conference, Police Chief Krantz stated that, a couple of months ago, his officers had conducted training at a school in Bend on how to respond to an active, lethal-violence incident.

“Unfortunately, these are scenarios we train for on an ongoing basis—and we must,” said Krantz.

FBI on-site

Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler stated that “this is a terrible day for our community.”

“We are devastated as we mourn this tragedy and the deep impact it has left on so many people—especially the children, families, teachers, and school staff whose lives have been changed forever,” said Kebler.

“A school should be a safe place where children can learn and feel secure.”

FBI official Kash Patel stated that FBI agents are on-site at the school to assist local police with the investigation.

Bend is located in central Oregon, approximately 250 kilometers (about 155 miles) southeast of Portland.
