NATO chief after Black Sea attacks: "Can adapt our capabilities"

NATO is prepared to further step up its presence on the eastern flank following drone attacks in the Black Sea. This was stated by NATO chief Mark Rutte after a meeting with the President of Romania and the Prime Minister of Bulgaria.

"NATO will continue to work closely with our allies in the Black Sea region and, if necessary, adapt our capabilities to deter and defend," he wrote on X on Thursday.

Drones suspected to be Russian have attacked a total of four cargo ships in Romanian and Bulgarian waters in the Black Sea this week, according to the *Sofia Globe*. Several crew members have been killed, and around ten are missing. Leaders from both countries have identified Russia as responsible and are calling for increased support from NATO.

The attacks "threaten not only maritime trade in our region but also vital supplies to agricultural industries on other continents," wrote Romanian President Nicușor Dan on X.

The issue is set to be discussed further at the NATO meeting next week, according to AFP.

Seamen missing after attacks on ships in the Black Sea

Seven seamen are missing following suspected Russian drone attacks on two tankers in the Black Sea off the coast of Romania on Thursday, Reuters reports.

The ships were reportedly in Romanian waters and caught fire during the attack. High waves in the area have hampered rescue efforts.

"There will be a reaction from the Romanian state," says Romanian President Nicusor Dan.

He confirms the attack but declines to confirm which country the drones came from.

On Tuesday, two more cargo ships were struck by suspected drone attacks off the coast of Bulgaria. One of the ships sank, and eleven people were reported missing. Bulgaria has accused Russia of the attack, the AP reports.
