The challenge: Support Taiwan and appease the country's farmers
Conservative Santiago Peña is facing a series of challenges now that he has been sworn in as the new president of Paraguay, reports Reuters. This applies not least on the foreign policy front.
According to the news agency, Paraguay is one of the few countries that has official diplomatic ties with Taiwan's self-ruled government, a relationship that has hurt the country's farmers as it has cracked down on exports to China.
Peña has so far resisted the pressure, and a business source familiar with the new president says Peña is not the type of politician to stand for radical change.
- He is not a politician who wants revolution. He wants development.
