The notorious gang leader is moved after the murder of the politician
Ecuador has moved one of the country's most notorious gang leaders, Adolfo "Fito" Macías, to a high-security prison, AP reports. This after he is said to be connected to the murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.
About 4,000 police officers took part in the military operation to move the gang leader from the dangerous Zon 8 prison in Guayaquil.
Fito leads the criminal group Choneros and has been sentenced to 34 years in prison for organized crime, murder and drug trafficking.
Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso has singled out drug cartels as responsible for the politician's assassination. Six Colombian citizens have been arrested, suspected of the murder.

She replaces the murdered politician in Ecuador
Climate activist Andrea González replaces the murdered presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in Ecuador, reports El Universo.
Villavicencio was shot dead in connection with an election campaign rally in Quito earlier this week. Six Colombian citizens are in custody suspected of the murder. The police state that all have connections to criminal groups.
The Build party, or Construye in Spanish, announced on social media that 36-year-old Andrea González would replace Villavicencio as its presidential candidate in the August 20 election.
