"Counterproductive attempt to save America's democracy"
The decision to stop Donald Trump from Colorado's primary election is facing almost unanimous opposition in America's leadership pages. Many are now pinning their hopes on the Supreme Court overturning the verdict.
"The best outcome would be for a unanimous court to give Trump the go-ahead to run," writes Ruth Marcus in the Washington Post, a newspaper that is considered to lean toward the Democrats.
The ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court builds on a body of law that prohibits people who incite insurrection from being elected to public office. The conservative Wall Street Journal editorial notes that Trump has not been convicted of any involvement in the storming of the Capitol.
In its editorial, the editors write that the courts should be kept out of the electoral process.
"The Democrats believe that Trump is such a big threat to democratic institutions that they have the right to abuse these institutions themselves. They are harming democracy in trying to save it.”

Colorado decision fuel for Trump - Biden campaign is said to be "cursed"
The decision by the Colorado Supreme Court to ban Donald Trump from being on the ballot in the primary election is a gift to Trump, several political observers say.
There seems to be consensus, from left to right, that the court's ruling fits perfectly into Trump's narrative of how the political and legal establishment is after him.
- It is rocket fuel for his voter base, says Mike Pence's former campaign adviser Chip Saltsman to the Financial Times.
Even Joe Biden and his staff are said to have been displeased with the news, and everyone is said to be hoping that the Supreme Court overturns the decision.
- They are pissed off, a source with insight into the discussions between Biden and his team told NBC News.
