If oil and gas companies are serious about tackling the climate crisis, they can help support poorer countries affected by it. This is what Spain's Climate Minister Teresa Ribera tells The Guardian.
According to Ribera, many EU countries share her opinion.
- Why not invite the oil and gas companies to donate part of their profits to investments in sustainable development in the most vulnerable countries? she says.
Spain holds the EU's rotating presidency, which gives Ribera a key role in the union's negotiations during the COP28 climate summit. In addition to support for developing countries, she is asking for better emissions reporting from companies and more taxes on fossil fuels.

The criticism of al-Jaber could damage trust
The harsh criticism of COP28 chairman Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber risks damaging trust in the UN climate summit as a whole, says Naghmeh Nasiritousi, researcher in climate policy at Uppsala University and the Institute for Foreign Policy, to TT.
- It can be a certain advantage that he has insight into how the oil sector works, but there are others who also have - without sitting on double chairs.
In addition to being chairman of the climate conference, al-Jaber is also head of the United Arab Emirates' state oil company.
Yesterday, an earlier statement by al-Jaber, in which he says that there is no research support for the need to phase out fossil fuels in order to reach the climate goals, was widely circulated.
"As if Count Dracula were in charge of the blood bank," states a climate activist according to TT.

The scientist: Coral reefs will become extinct if we miss the target
Already at 1.5 degrees of warming, 70 percent of coral reefs risk dying - and if we pass two degrees, 99 percent risk disappearing. This is what Australian climate scientist and biologist Ove Hoegh-Guldberg tells SvD.
According to him, the large number of species that live in coral reefs today supports about half a billion people.
- If the corals die, there will be consequences for marine life that affect the w
