The Russian invasion. The outside world's response
The Senate gives up - does not go to the case for Ukraine support this year
The US Senate is giving up trying to agree on a new aid package for Ukraine this side of the year. Bloomberg reports.
- This is simply a difficult issue, says the Senate majority leader, Democrat Chuck Schumer, and admits that the negotiations require more time.
Republican politicians have blocked a major aid package proposed by President Joe Biden. They demand a hearing on several domestic policy issues in return, including a tougher crackdown on migration.
Congress will meet again on January 22, 2024.

The army wants to mobilize half a million Ukrainians
The Ukrainian military has notified President Volodymyr Zelenskyi that it wants to mobilize an additional 450,000 to 500,000 people into the country's army, Reuters reports.
No decision on the "very sensitive issue" has been made, says the president at a press conference.
He further says that additional funding would be required and that no one knows how long the war with Russia will last.

Russian invasionUkraine's response
Expert: Costly and difficult to mobilize - but Ukraine has no choice
Mobilizing between 450,000 and 500,000 people as the Ukrainian army has asked President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to do would be costly, time-consuming and a logistical challenge. That's what Oscar Jonsson, PhD in military science at the Norwegian Defense Academy, tells DN.
At the same time, he states that Ukraine does not have many other options in defense against Russia's invasion.
- Considering the huge numbers that Russia is throwing into the war, Ukraine has no other choice but to mobilize, he says.
Zelenskyy has not made a decision but says at a press conference that it is a "very sensitive issue". In addition, such a large mobilization is estimated to cost around 136 billion Swedish kronor.
- Where are we going to get that money from? Zelensky asked himself at the press conference.
