The eruption is decreasing in force - new flight over the area
The volcanic eruption in Iceland continues with considerable force, but has subsided somewhat since midnight when it was at its most intense. This is reported by Ruv. Seismic activity has also decreased significantly.
Experts made another flight with the Coast Guard helicopter over the area at 5 am local time. Geoscientist Magnús Tumi Gudmundsson was on board the helicopter. He says the lava flow has slowed.
- In this type of eruption, eventually a crater takes over and this causes the lava flow to decrease over time.
The newspaper Morgunbladid writes that the images show that the craters in the center of the eruption are not completely connected as it looked like from the beginning. Instead, it appears to be up to three main craters and a series of smaller ones.
During the morning, Iceland's government will meet due to the outbreak.

Expert: Could end today – or last several months
It is difficult to say how long the volcanic eruption in Iceland will last, according to experts. Halldor Geirson, a geology researcher at the University of Iceland, told The Telegraph that it could last for months, but added:
- It could also end later today or tomorrow.
Sam Mitchell, researcher in volcanology at the University of Bristol, is on the same track. In the worst case, it is months.
- Larger and more intense eruptions tend to last a shorter time, but with a small flow it can continue for a while.
