Then he went straight into the TV studio and saw Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
– They don’t care about Europe, he says.

The conservative CDU/CSU looks set to secure victory in the German election with over 29 percent of the vote.
Shortly after the first exit polls were presented, party leader Merz took the podium and declared victory.
In a live interview with the ARD television company, he then launched a harsh attack on Donald Trump's government.
– I am in contact with many prime ministers and heads of state in the EU and for me it is an absolute priority to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible, so that we achieve independence from the USA.
Merz launches a harsh attack on Trump's latest statements about Europe.
– I never thought I would ever have to say something like this on TV, but after the latest statements from Donald Trump last week, it is clear that the Americans – at least these Americans, this administration – do not care about the fate of Europe.

Merz casts doubt on NATO's preparedness and says that Europe must act quickly to strengthen its own defense.
He also criticizes Elon Musk for interfering in the German election and campaigning for the far-right AfD, which became the second largest party with 19 percent of the vote.
– The influence we have seen from Washington has been no less drastic and dramatic, nor less brazen than what we have seen from Moscow.
Donald Trump commented on the German election results in a post on Truth Social.
“Just like in the United States, the German people are tired of an agenda that lacks common sense, especially when it comes to energy and immigration, as it has been for so many years,” he writes on Truth Social.
“Congratulations to everyone – many more victories await,” he concludes.

5 points about the elections in Germany

CDU leader Friedrich Merz has declared victory in the German elections to the Bundestag. Everything indicates that he will become the country's next chancellor.
1. The new elections come after political chaos in Germany
It all started with a budget dispute between Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who leads the liberal FDP. Scholz then dismissed the Finance Minister, which led to all FDP ministers choosing to resign. The government fell, the political crisis was a fact and new elections were called.
2. Christian Democrats' Friedrich Merz: "We have won the election"
Not long after the first election polls were complete, CDU's Friedrich Merz declared victory in the election. He is heading towards becoming Germany's new chancellor and in a speech he said that the goal is to quickly form a government.
– The world out there is not waiting for us, he says.
But there has been a lot of talk about him and the party. He is accused of pulling the party too far to the right and getting closer to the far-right AfD party. He himself says that cooperation with the AfD is not an option.
3. The AfD looks set to have a successful election - supported by Musk
The far-right AfD is expected to be the second largest party and has 19.5 percent of the vote according to the first survey.
Multi-billionaire Elon Musk, who has become an important player in Trump's new government, has repeatedly praised the AfD and said that it is the only party that can "save Germany".
At the same time, there have been massive protests around the country against the party ahead of the election and Social Democrat Olof Scholz has called Musk "disgusting" for interfering in an election in Europe.
4. Several parties close to the five percent threshold
The first election surveys show that both the liberal FDP and the left-wing populist BSW are balancing at the five percent threshold. The liberal FDP, which previously sat in the government, looks set to get 4.9 percent. The left-wing populist BSW looks set to get 4.8 percent. The five percent threshold could be of great importance because it affects who the CDU has the opportunity to form a government with, and minority governments are unusual in Germany.
5. The election affects the whole of Europe
Germany is Europe's largest economy and has great influence in Europe. The election result could affect everything from energy prices and the labor market to security policy and the future direction of the EU.
As Sweden's largest trading partner, what happens in Germany could have a major impact on the Swedish economy.
At the same time, the country has been without a leader for several months. Many now hope that a government will be formed quickly so that the country becomes more stable. At the same time, the AfD could make things more difficult if they are excluded from a government partnership as the second largest party.
