The Negotiations
Analysis: “The Toughest Meeting Since World War II”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to meet President Donald Trump today after the US’s reversal in relations with Russia and Ukraine.
CNN’s Stephen Collinson writes in an analysis that it is one of the toughest meetings between a British prime minister and an American president since World War II. Starmer has a crucial mission in the Oval Office, he notes.
“To get Donald Trump away from Russian President Vladimir Putin, to extract security guarantees for Ukraine after a possible peace agreement and to save the transatlantic alliance,” writes Collinson.
Beth Rigby is on the same track in her analysis for Sky News. She can think of no other meeting between the White House and a British prime minister that means as much as this one.
She writes that the leaders’ relationship is truly important for Britain’s security and economy.

Trump gives Musk more power in the hunt for public waste
Donald Trump is giving his right-hand man Elon Musk and his "efficiency authority" Doge more power in the hunt for what they call public waste, writes Axios.
The president has now signed a new presidential order that gives Doge employees the authority to review what agencies and departments spend on contracts, grants and loans. Where relevant, contracts and grants will be terminated or changed to promote efficiency, according to the White House.
The process should begin immediately and be completed within 30 days, according to the order.

Fired staff at USAID are given 15 minutes to pack up
The Trump administration has fired thousands of employees from the American aid agency USAID.
A message on the agency's website states that those who were fired should pick up their belongings on Thursday and Friday and turn in things that belong to the agency, reports the AP. Each worker will only be allowed 15 minutes at their previous workstation.
The notice instructed employees not to bring weapons, including "spear guns" and "hand grenades."
Over 90 percent of all contracts with the aid agency will be terminated.

American Supreme Court postpones decision on aid
The American Supreme Court is postponing a decision by a judge who demanded that the Trump administration pay out billions of dollars in aid abroad.
The court's decision, which states that money must be paid for aid contracts signed before Donald Trump took office, is postponed for the time being.
The judge, following a lawsuit filed by aid organizations, had set a deadline of midnight local time.
It was at the beginning of February that the announcement that USAID would be shut down and aid would be frozen came. Since then, thousands of aid and development programs around the world have been terminated.
The Trump administration has also decided to lay off almost the entire staff at the agency.
