The world's response
Analysis: More "bromance" than reassuring messages when Trump and Macron met
Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron have a good relationship and during the leaders' meeting at the White House they showed off their "bromance" several times, says Sky News' Mark Stone. In an analysis on the podcast "Trump 100", he says that the two world leaders seem to understand each other.
- In this sensitive situation, it is very important, he says.
But a good relationship is not enough. CNN's Stephen Collinson points out that Trump did not offer any American support during the meeting, despite Macron talking about solidarity and progress. One reason for Trump's passivity may be that the American president wants to stay on good terms with Putin ahead of their meeting.
"Despite Macron's talk of progress, Trump still sees the war through a different lens," he writes.
Philippe Ricard and Piotr Smolar at Le Monde also note that Trump “not once” spoke about shared values, European security or good transatlantic alliances.
The meeting did not provide any reassuring messages about the relationship between the US and Europe, they argue.
US UN votes praised by the Kremlin: “Welcome”
The US has been criticized for voting against a resolution in the UN General Assembly that demands the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. The country also passed a resolution in the Security Council that does not condemn Russia. But the tone in the Kremlin is different.
– The US is taking a more balanced position that is genuinely aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict. We welcome it, says Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov according to AFP.
Kukies goes against Trump: G7 will not let Russia in
Russia will not be welcomed back to the G7. This is what German Finance Minister Jörg Kukies says after US President Donald Trump said it was a mistake to exclude Russia.
– The G7's condemnation of Russia's war of aggression is very clear, he says according to Reuters.
The informal G7 group consists of the US, Britain, Germany, Canada, Japan, France and Italy. The group was previously called the G8, but in 2014 Russia was thrown out after the annexation of Crimea.
