Several people aboard a canal boat are feared to have drowned when the boat sank in the Nguse River in Uganda.

The accident occurred in the Kagade region on Wednesday night, and according to police, only one person has been found alive.

Searches continued during the day, while the cause of the accident was investigated by the marine police.

"Possible causes are that the boat was overloaded, that the trip was made at night and that the ship was not seaworthy," police wrote.

The exact number missing cannot be determined as there is no passenger list.
