EU: Important for the US to have a military presence in Europe
It is in the US interest that the American military remains in Europe. This is what EU spokesperson Anitta Hipper says after Donald Trump's latest threat to move troops from Germany.
She says that it is important for the US to have a presence in Europe to maintain its "global role".
Trump's statement came after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the US war in Iran.
Trump: Considering Moving Troops from Germany
The US is considering reducing the number of US troops stationed in Germany, Donald Trump writes on Truth Social.
"A decision will be made shortly," he adds.
This comes after the argument with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who is under heavy pressure from the economic effects of the Iran war. Earlier this week, Merz said that the US lacked a strategy when it entered a war that now risks being as protracted as Iraq and Afghanistan.
- An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, he added.
Trump responded that Merz "doesn't know what he's talking about."
Earlier in April, White House sources told the Wall Street Journal that Trump is considering moving troops to punish NATO countries that he does not think have helped the US enough in the Iran war.
