British king begins controversial US visit

Great Britain's King Charles and Queen Camilla landed at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington DC on Monday evening, Swedish time, several media outlets report.

The four-day state visit is taking place on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the United States. It is King Charles' first visit to the United States since he was crowned in 2022.

AFP describes it as a "diplomatic charm offensive against the royalty-obsessed Trump". The visit is controversial in Britain due to Trump's harsh rhetoric against the British government, which he believes has not helped the United States enough in the Iran war.

Concerns have also been expressed for the king's safety from several quarters after Saturday's shooting at the

correspondents' dinner in Washington.

Trump meets the royal couple – tea party at the White House

US President Donald and Melania Trump have welcomed Britain's King Charles and Queen Camilla to the White House, reports the BBC.

They gathered for a photo opportunity outside and exchanged a few words, but made no statements. They then went inside for a tea party. Among other things, small, typically British tea sandwiches were served, as well as pastries and honey.

In Washington DC, King Charles will give a speech during a dinner at the White House and before Congress. The trip will then go to New York, where the royal couple will visit the memorial site for the September 11 attacks with Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The trip will end in Virginia with a visit to nature conservation organizations. Nature conservation has long been close to the British monarch's heart.
