Venezuelan opposition is calling on the regime to hold presidential elections. The demand comes from, among others, Nobel laureate Maria Corina Machado.

In a statement on Friday, the opposition movement stated that the deadline to hold new elections has expired since former President Nicolás Maduro was deposed and taken away by the US military.

Vice President Delcy Rodriguez replaced Maduro on January 5, two days after Maduro was flown to New York to stand trial.

But Machado, who is a rallying figure for oppositionists within the Vente movement, is demanding that a presidential election be held “30 days after this call.”

According to Venezuela's constitution, an absent president must be replaced within 90 days of his disappearance, with the possibility of an extension.
