1,600 rescue workers have arrived in Venezuela
Venezuela is receiving 1,600 foreign rescue workers sent from more than ten countries to help with the efforts after the earthquake, Reuters reports.
More rescue workers are expected to arrive in the coming 24 hours.
“We thank the international community for its support and solidarity during this uncertain time for Venezuelans. Together we will get through this,” Oliver Blanco of Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry wrote in a post on X.
Almost seven million people, two million of whom are in the capital Caracas, are estimated to have been affected by the earthquake, the UN said, according to AFP.
New earthquake in Venezuela – felt in the capital
A new strong earthquake has hit Venezuela overnight, Reuters reports. According to the European Seismological Center EMSC, the quake had a magnitude of 4.9.
The earthquake occurred off the country's northern coast and was felt in the capital Caracas, among other places.
Meanwhile, rescue efforts continue after the two major earthquakes earlier this week, both of which had a magnitude of over 7. Around 50,000 people are still missing and teams from several countries are on site to assist.
Over 900 people are confirmed dead and over 3,300 people are injured.
