EU provides new aid package for Lebanon's military
The EU has approved a new aid package of 100 million euros for Lebanon, with the aim of supporting the country's military during the fragile ceasefire.
"The recent ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon represents a chance to avoid a return to full-scale hostilities," writes EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on X.
"The best way to reduce the threat from Hezbollah is to strengthen the Lebanese state and its institutions, and to restore its monopoly on violence," Kallas adds.
The support is the fourth package of its kind from the EU in recent years.
Israel continued its attacks in Lebanon on Thursday, despite the agreement earlier this week on a ceasefire. Hezbollah, which was not involved in the talks in Washington, has in turn demanded an end to the Israeli invasion if the group is to respect an agreement.
