New Israeli attack in Lebanon – agreement condemned

Israel has carried out a drone attack on Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, the Israeli military says. The attack is the first to be directed at Lebanon since Israel and Lebanon signed a framework agreement for long-term peace on Friday.

The Israeli military says the attack was directed at what it calls "terrorists". The extent of the damage is unclear.

The attack comes at the same time that Israel has committed to begin withdrawing from parts of southern Lebanon, according to the agreement reached between the countries in Washington DC on Friday.

Iran-backed Hezbollah has condemned the peace settlement between the countries. On Saturday, militia leader Naim Qassem called the agreement a mistake and that it “legitimizes Israeli occupation.”

After the agreement was signed, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said that the settlement with Israel will mean the end of occupation.
