Stubb raises alarm about Russian attack on NATO

Finnish President Alexander Stubb does not share the concern that Russia may want to test NATO's Article 5 in the relatively near future.

- As president, commander-in-chief and Finn, I see no evidence that this would happen, he tells HBL.

Among others, Sweden's commander-in-chief Michael Claesson has warned that Russia may want to test NATO's readiness earlier than previously thought. But according to Stubb, it is neither logical nor reasonable that Russia would do so at a time when the country is under heavy pressure in the war against Ukraine.

- If the purpose is to prepare the population, increase the defense budget or strengthen the defense industry, so be it. But such statements must be based on facts, and I see none.

He urges his European colleagues to do as the Finns do.

– Go to the sauna, take a dip in the ice wake and stay calm. We keep a cool head – and mind you, we are the ones who have the border with Russia. We will manage.
