Rubio: Trump to attend NATO summit in Turkey
US President Donald Trump will attend the NATO summit in Turkey in July. This is what Secretary of State Marco Rubio says, according to Reuters.
- I think the next NATO summit in July could be the most important in NATO's history, because there are some things that need to be sorted out, says Rubio.
The NATO summit in Turkey takes place on July 7-8 in Ankara. It comes at a time when relations between the US and NATO are at an all-time low.
Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO member states for not helping in the war in Iran. Trump has also threatened to leave the alliance, which is unlikely at this point as it would require an absolute majority in the Senate.
US Tribute to Sweden: “I Wish Every NATO Country Had It”
During a hearing in the Congressional Foreign Affairs Committee, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised Sweden’s and Finland’s membership in NATO.
He said that both countries have strengthened the alliance’s defense capabilities by contributing their own defense industries and advanced technology.
“They have been an excellent partner. They have been an extraordinary partner,” Rubio said.
He also paid special tribute to Sweden’s defense industry.
“Sweden has its own defense industrial base, and it is an impressive one. I wish every NATO country had what Sweden has, but I also understand why Sweden has built up that capacity,” Rubio said.
