Analysis: Two leaders, two relationships – and a funeral

On the same day, Donald Trump received both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

The two visits provide an unusual picture of a world in crisis, writes The Guardian's Julian Borger. At the same time, they show how Trump's relationships with the two leaders have developed in different directions.

Netanyahu arrives with significantly less support from Trump in the wake of the war with Iran.

Zelensky, on the other hand, comes from a stronger position.

"Ukraine has refuted the US administration's predictions of inevitable defeat by Russia. The country is now a world leader in drone warfare, and parts of the Maga movement have begun to reassess the leader they previously mocked as a loser."

Both leaders are also in the US to attend the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham. According to Sky News correspondent David Blevins, this gives the meetings a special symbolism. Blevins describes it as Graham's death bringing Trump together with the two leaders, just as Graham himself did during his lifetime.

- In many ways, he personified the American foreign policy that advocated active international engagement and strong support for both Ukraine and Israel, he says.

Zelensky: Talked about the production of Patriots

The meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House has now ended, the Ukrainian president writes on Telegram.

In the post, Zelensky thanks Trump for his support for Ukraine and for his efforts to achieve peace. He also states that the two leaders discussed a license to manufacture Patriot missiles in Ukraine, as well as other ideas that could contribute to the country's defense.

Ukraine warns Iran against escalating the conflict

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha says he has warned his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi against escalating the conflict after Ukraine's attack on an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea. Reuters reports.

"I stressed the importance of refraining from further escalation and ending all support for Russia's war against Ukraine. The war is illegal and must end," Sybiha writes on X.

One person was killed and one injured in the attack on the ship, which Ukraine says was carrying weapons. Iran has condemned the attack and said it will not be left unanswered.

Iran confirms that the two foreign ministers have spoken, but does not provide further details.
