US and Iran reportedly pause attacks
US President Donald Trump is said to have ordered a reduction in attacks on Iran to open up for new talks. Iran is also said to be suspending its attacks.
US UN Ambassador Mike Walz communicated the task:
- Trump is giving talks some space, Walz said in an interview with the influential television program Fox News Sunday.
According to two sources to the news site Axios, the US top commander in the Middle East, Admiral Brad Cooper, recommended the president to end the nightly airstrikes on targets in Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
Until last Friday, the US carried out attacks for 13 days in a row. Since then, the US attacks have almost completely ceased.
On Sunday evening, Iran's military said it had halted what it called retaliatory attacks on Washington's allies in the Middle East.
According to Mike Walz, progress in negotiations contributed to Trump's decision to pause attacks. Oman, among others, is said to have been involved in negotiations that took place "at the highest level down to the technical level".
Walz said at the same time that the US is "loaded and ready" to attack Iran and that "more equipment has been sent to the region".
