The US annual defense budget has stalled in the Senate. Democrats have stopped a vote in protest against the Trump administration's war on Iran and the high price tag: 1.15 trillion dollars (just over 11,000 billion kronor).

The annual defense bill – previously approved in a Senate committee – does not usually lead to political deadlocks. It must be hammered out to ensure salaries for soldiers and the defense force's construction and industrial investments.

The minority leader in the Senate, Democrat Chuck Schumer, justifies the opposition by saying that he does not want to contribute to indirectly approving "the recklessness we see unfolding in Iran".

Republicans need 60 votes to pass, but in a vote on Tuesday they only reached 50.

“It will probably be difficult to get it this week,” says Democratic Senator Tim Kaine.

Defense budget stalls as Senate fights over Iran

The escalating conflict with Iran has led to the US Senate being unable to vote through the country's annual defense budget, reports TT.

The reason is the US conflict with Iran, which has escalated more and more in the past week - despite the countries signing a memorandum of understanding in mid-June. This has led to the Democratic members not wanting to vote through the defense budget, writes Al Jazeera.

Democratic minority leader Chuck Schumer believes that by not voting through the budget, they avoid indirectly approving "the recklessness we see unfolding in Iran".

The proposed defense budget this year is 1.15 trillion dollars, equivalent to approximately 11,000 billion Swedish kronor. According to TT, it usually does not lead to any deadlocks in the Senate.
