Low water levels – Romania may close nuclear power plant
The flow of the Danube in Romania has dropped to 1,500 cubic meters per second – less than a third of the average in July.
On Monday, the military used 180 kilograms of explosives to remove rocks near the Bala Canal, in an attempt to redirect water towards the Cernavoda nuclear power plant.
Romania is struggling with record low water levels in the Danube River, which has led to significant reductions in electricity production and disruptions to shipping and agriculture.
The country’s authorities have already shut down one reactor unit at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, but now the plant’s second reactor is also at risk of having to be shut down.
Acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared a nationwide state of emergency on Friday and urged citizens to limit electricity consumption during the evening peak hours.
