Aung San Suu Kyi received visitors - first time in five years

Myanmar's former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has received an official visit from abroad for the first time since she was ousted in 2021, writes AFP.

Red Cross representative Arnaud de Baecque is said to have met the 81-year-old at her home, where she is under house arrest.

Unverified, and unusual, images released by the Myanmar government show Suu Kyi shaking hands with de Baecque and cutting a cake with the text "Happy Birthday Aunt Suu" on it.

Suu Kyi was Myanmar's democratically elected leader until she was ousted in a military coup.

Son: Meeting is a first step – cannot be the last

The fact that Myanmar’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has received an official visit for the first time since she was imprisoned in 2021 is a good sign, but so far nothing more than that. Her son Kim Aris told Reuters.

– This may be a first step, but it must not be the last.

Aung San Suu Kyi was recently moved from prison to house arrest, but is being kept completely isolated from the outside world. Her son said earlier this year that he had not received any information about his mother’s health and that they had not been allowed to speak to each other for several years.
