After political chaos: Kosovo has a new government
It took three elections and countless attempts, but Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti has now secured approval for a new government.
Kosovo is set to transition from a "potential candidate country" to an official EU candidate country; Albin Kurti pledged to make this a priority for the new administration just before parliament approved his government.
The Prime Minister was then able to celebrate the fact that Kosovo finally has a government after 18 months of political chaos.
The country was plunged into crisis in February 2025 when parliamentary elections resulted in a political deadlock. A snap election last December failed to break the impasse, and the population had to cast their votes a third time in June of this year.
Negotiations dragged on for a long time before finally being resolved, with 62 of the 120 members of parliament voting in favor of a coalition government led by Kurti’s party, Vetëvendosje.
