More than 280 people have been arrested in connection with demonstrations honoring the victims of Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship in Chile.

Demonstrations and rallies are held annually to mark the coup d'état of September 11, 1973, when Augusto Pinochet seized power in the country.

A total of 284 people were arrested on Thursday and Friday, according to Security Minister Martín Arrau, a member of the right-wing government that took office earlier this year.

The arrests occurred during clashes between police and demonstrators.

According to AFP, this year marks the first time since the Pinochet era that no official events are being held by the authorities to mark the anniversary.

More than 3,200 people were killed or disappeared during Pinochet's rule. In addition, tens of thousands of people were imprisoned and tortured.
